In the United States, there is no shortage of colleges and universities offering bachelors degrees in interior design and with the growing popularity of online degree programs, those interested in becoming an interior designer have access to an abundance of distance education programs and online degrees in interior design. Programs in interior design range from 60-credit diploma and certificate courses to full bachelors degree, 132 credit degrees in interior design.
Since 24 states have registration, competency exams, and license requirements for interior designers, earning a degree in interior design is highly recommended for obtaining an entry-level position as an interior designer. Even in states that do not require an interior designers license, it is advisable to prove your qualifications as an interior designer by passing the National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam. To become eligible to take the exam, prospective qualifiers must show proof of at least 6 years of education and experience in interior design. 2 of the 6 years must be comprised of post-secondary education courses in interior design. Those who pass the exam earn the title of Certified, Registered, or Licensed Interior Designer depending on the state of residency. Earning the title of qualified Interior Designer will be a strong tool in the search for an interior design job, thus it is highly recommended that prospective interior designers find and start a degree program in interior design to qualify for the exam.
